Katrina Tekavek: Philadelphia Food Stylist

Biography

Katrina Tekavec My background is photography. I studied photography and very early in my career I was a dedicated photographer's assistant, fluent in all types of cameras and strobe equipment as well as knowing my way around a darkroom, both in film processing and printing.

I was a people photographer for a few years while simultaneously pursuing a career in styling, before settling on a career dedicated to styling - never looking back. It is the career that I am most suited for, without question. I still shoot for myself with a non digital, fully manual Nikon FM2 and keep an active interest in fine art photography.

As I gained experience with styling, I found my own sensibilities with regard to the overall projects, I began art directing my own promotional materials, promotional materials for some of my colleagues and finally for assignment. Photo art direction has been the natural progression for my career as I continue with it more and more, having ever-increasing opportunities to collaborate with clients directly on their creative needs. I am often the only liaison between the client and the photographer, doubling as art director and stylist, overseeing assistants, second food stylists, and prop stylists depending on the size and duration of the project.

I am also a self-taught pastry chef, I taught a class on food styling at the Restaurant School in Philadelphia and presented a demonstration for other stylists at Food On Film '03 on Beverages and Special Effects.

I am currently primarily a freelance food stylist & art director, but I still maintain a few bedding and room set clients and enjoy that work a few times a year. I also do some recipe development for several of my clients.
